Born in the USA!

I wish I could have Bruce Springsteen’s song playing just because this post is THAT appropriate. I think one thing I’ve learned that I’m passionate about is products being made in America or away from sweatshop conditions. I took a few classes about fashion economics, and watching such documentaries like China Blue, Mardi Gras: Made in China, and even videos on human trafficking/counterfeit products has made me a firm believer in American products. I won’t get into details because it makes me sick to my stomach, feel free to Google those documentaries yourself if you’d like to be a bit more educated on sweatshop conditions, the black market, and trafficking/counterfeit products. It is definitely something that will change your life and view about shopping!

It’s such a rare gem to find that “Made in America” tag! When you buy American-made products, more jobs are created within the United States with adequate and proper pay within PROPER working conditions and environment! Product quality and support of local families that could very well be your own family are just another part of the Made in America movement.

Just a few brands/designers that are made within the United States:

1. Dogeared
2. Hanky Panky
3. Deborah Lippmann
4. Tarina Tarantino
5. Splendid
6. Paige Premium Denim
7. Giraffe at Home
8. Petunia Pickle Bottom
9. Laura Mercier
10. Frye
11. Vinturi

Cashmere Shoes?

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s super-dee-duper high end fashion line, The Row, has teamed up with TOMS to create plaid and cashmere slip on shoes! Set to debut in Fall 2011, the shoes will retail anywhere between $98.00-$150.00 a pair. Worth the price for a pair TOMS? Considering Neiman Marcus sells their exclusive silver-plated TOMS logo’d for a good $90.00, and a pair of ‘The Row’ pants can run you a good $1,700..I say, RACHEL APPROVED!

Besides, didn’t we have to have almost EVERYTHING Mary-Kate and Ashley related when we were kids? Just another chance to be part of their success!

Cheaply Homely.

“Home is wherever I’m with you.”

Home by Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeroes is the cutest folksy song, ever. If you haven’t heard it, you must download it! I just love this song dearly – why? My boyfriend and I are working on 4 months of being together-together after knowing each other for 7 years. Downfall, we’re long distance..a good 2 hour-or-2.5 hour-trip, depending if you’re speed demon-ing your way to Houston/Austin.With me trying to figure out my internship location/deal/happenings, there’s no telling where I’ll end up. I miss my family/boyfriend/friends back in Houston, but, really..home is whenever I’m with my loved ones in Houston or Austin.

I’m thankful to have a roof over my head, but my current living situation is a bit re-donk-u-lus. There’s 4 of us in a 4 bedroom/4 bath townhome in a college apartment complex. It’s constantly loud, trashed from social gatherings, and munchkin sized rooms. My queen size bed, dresser, nightstand, and dog crate take up my ENTIRE room. I also have a sliding-mirrored closet. I take GREAT offense to that. I’m such a nut for my clothes, why would you give me two doors, no walkspace, no shelves, so I can’t admire the beauty my closet gives off? Sad.  We also do not have any furniture. My roommate sold our couch, kitchen table, 6 dining room chairs, coffee table, side table and T.V. at the end of January for when she moves to Hawaii in June. I know, I thought the EXACT same thing. So really, this place is just being occupied.

I’m hoping I get to stay in Austin, the boyfriend moves to Austin, and I move to my own place to call my own. My own pots and pans, my own furniture, my own doormat. Yeah, my very own.

So, I’ve been on a home decor hunt! Pottery Barn had a DIRT cheap sale for their holiday decorations. Ha. I can’t even think about the end of this year just yet, but it was cheap and worth it.

Faux Leaves – $1.16 –> originally $14.00
2 boxes of Faux Snow – $0.84 each –> originally $12.00
Small wooden crate – $9.84 –> originally $29.00
Cranberry vase filler – $1.16 –> originally $14.00
Boxwood lit up tree – $8.47 –> originally $79.00
3 boxes of glass ornaments – $0.82 each –> originally $14.00

So I paid $26.27 (including tax) for these 9 items. Combined, it would’ve cost me $202.00! So I potentially saved $175.73 had I have bought these full-priced. Not bad for some holiday decor. Now if only I had room to store it…

February’s Beauty Mini-haul

I don’t know what there ISN’T to love about fashion: I love my job (oogling over clothes, yes!), designing the accessories of my new apartment that’s about 6 months away, finding key staple pieces to tie in my outfits, and MAKE-UP. I find make-up is an art, it enhances your beauty, something to express emotions through, and to have fun with.

Recently, MAC debuted their “Wonder Woman” line. With fierce colors and amazing Wonder Woman packaging, you can see the POW! of this line. I wasn’t too crazy about the eyeshadow colors, or the lip colors except for one amazing subtle nude called, “Emancipation”.

The brush is ABSOLUTELY ginormous. I don’t even think I’ve used it where I didn’t even slightly have to put some effort into pulling the wand out. The wand doesn’t “soak up” enough product as a typical wand, but it’s enough to only do one swipe of color/coverage on the lips.

Nice subtle nude, right? Slight shimmer as well!

My next item, or items? I purchased the NARS “Tainted Love” set for $59.00, for 3 full sized items: Angelika lip gloss, Angelika The Multiple, and Schiap nail polish.  The Multiple is used as lip color, eye color, and cheek color: hence, the multiple ways you can use it. A nice blending made this color a nicely flushed cheek look.  I thought this was a steal, considering each individual item can potentially cost $25-$28 dollars. It is a $78 dollar value, so, money well spent.

Schiap nail polish

The only problem I had with the nail polish is with it being a bit pricey (runs about $17 alone!), I would have expected it to last longer. Schiap and I went to get a manicure, and within about 4 days, it was chipping! This was with a base coat, 2 coats of Schiap and top coat. Gorgeous color, but I definately don’t think I’ll be buying NARS nail polish for fun, unless it comes within a set. OPI has much better long lasting coverage than any other nail polish I’ve seen and experienced.

Some time ago, I received a sample itty-bitty plastic jar of Philosophy’s  Microdelivery Exfoliating Wash and it was the BEST thing I have ever put on my face! Another pricey item, $25 for the smaller 8 ounce bottle, but definitely worth every penny. It comes out this translucent clear-ish liquid with no fragrance. As you begin to wash your face, you can honestly feel the dead skin cells being sloughed off! Most exfoliants have beads that irritate or disappear without doing anything; these micro beads inside this gem are so tiny and gentle, that it WORKS wonders. My skin has never glowed so much, felt so clean during and after my shower, and appreciated a mild and gently face wash! And for the record, I have moody skin!

Saturday Sounds

It’s always nice to get a recommendation for music downloads. I totally, if you haven’t already, recommend Itunes. Not only is it quick, easy, and virus-free for those who are still on Windows platforms; you are able to customize playlists have album cover artwork for your music – it’s definitely pretty to look at when it’s organized to your liking. I call this Saturday Sounds; it may be songs you’ve never heard, have an open mind to, songs I love and think you should own. Music does heal the soul, no matter what genre.

  • S&M – Rihanna
  • Moment 4 Life – Nicki Minaj featuring Drake
  • Taste – Josh Abbot Band
  • Sexual Healing – Marvin Gaye
  • Stereo Love – Edward Maya & Vika Jigulina
  • American Honey – Lady Antebellum
  • Lovefool – The Cardigans

What am I doing?

I may be the most biggest nerd, EVER. But, I’m so stoked for this…

I can’t wait to network, learn, experience, and be inspired! There are too many amazing blogs out in blogland that I am dying to learn how to grow from! My only small frowny-face about the date is with it being on a Saturday, me working in retail, it being the first weekend of Spring Break (I love having responsibilities)…I may have to miss that day. But, the 13th has been requested off and my registration has been paid for!

This will be my second Fashion conference, but my first about social media/blogging since I’m just now getting into the swing of things on keeping up with a blog! I’m sure I’m not the only one though.

Are you going to The Texas Style Council Conference? Please comment and say hi! I’d love to introduce myself and become best friends with you.
